Vented vs. Vent-Free

What's the Difference?

Vented gas logs are the most common type of gas logs for masonry or UL 127 zero-clearance fireplaces. They require an open damper to burn, hence the “vented” portion of the name!

The benefits of vented gas logs can be simplified down to the following points:

  • Most realistic flame appearance
    • Flames wrap around the logs naturally
    • Flames are tall and more naturally colored
  • Removes the need for messy wood storage
  • Easy to light with minimal maintenance

The main downsides of Vented Gas Logs can be simplified down to the following points:

  • The open damper will draw air out of your home.
  • Only get radiant heat from the fireplace.
  • Will produce soot over time on the logs, requiring periodic cleaning.

Vented Gas Logs will typically only work in masonry fireplaces (built according to IRC 1001) and metal prefabricated fireplaces approved under UL 127.

Some models of fireplaces strictly forbid the use of gas logs inside of them, so please reach out to us to see if you can utilize them.

Vent-Free gas logs (also known as “ventless”) are a relatively new style of gas logs that do not require an open damper for safe operation.

The benefits of vented gas logs can be simplified down to the following points:

  • Because you can burn them with the damper closed, you get a LOT more heat!
  • Dual-Rated for vented operation if you want to open the damper for less heat
  • Removes the need for messy wood storage
  • Easy to light with minimal maintenance

The main downsides of Vented Gas Logs can be simplified down to the following points:

  • When burning with the damper closed, a slight odor can be produced
    • Typically, from dust or dander burning off the logs after periods of non-use.
    • This odor is more noticeable for certain individuals
  • Less realistic flame appearance
    • Logs are designed to not impede the flames to ensure proper combustion
    • Flames are more “restricted” overall to ensure they burn as efficiently as possible

Vent-Free gas logs are much more restricted in terms of what fireplaces they are allowed to be installed within. Most fireplaces are tested for use with Vent-Free Gas Logs and will say “Approved for Vent-Free Gas Logs”.

Additionally, Vent-Free Gas Logs are not permitted to be used within a sleeping room or a bathroom, nor can they be used in too small of a room.

Please ask an associate to verify if a Vent-Free Gas Log will work in your fireplace!
